Get the most from your facial

Before and after your facial

Before your visit

  • Stop retinol and other retinoids, exfoliating acids (like glycolic, lactic or salicylic) and scrubs for 7 days before your facial. If you use a prescription retinoid, tell Jo when you book.
  • Come without makeup if you can. If you're wearing some, Jo will take it off.
  • Need extractions before a big event? Book at least 7 days ahead.
  • Extractions can feel tender. If you'd like to take a pain reliever before your visit, check with your doctor first.
  • Arrive a few minutes early for your skin check.

After your facial

  • Leave your aftercare products on overnight. If your facial was early in the day, wash your face that night and do your usual routine.
  • Wait at least a day before you wear makeup or work out.
  • Stay out of the sun for about 5 days. If you need to be outside, wear SPF 45 or higher.
  • After dermaplaning, a light peel or sea spicules, wait about 7 days before you restart retinol or exfoliating acids, or longer if your skin is still red or flaky.
  • For acne-prone skin, book your next visit 1 to 2 weeks later.

Questions about facials

How many acne facials will I need?

Jo usually recommends 3 visits, one every 1 to 2 weeks. Ask Jo about the 3-visit package for $425. Call or text 805-744-5545.

Will my skin break out after an acne facial?

Sometimes. A few small breakouts in the first days after extractions can be normal. If you're worried about how your skin looks, text Jo.

Can I get a facial if I use retinol or Accutane?

Retinol: yes, but stop it, along with exfoliating acids and scrubs, 7 days before your facial. Accutane (isotretinoin): please tell Jo when you book. The labels for isotretinoin medicines say to avoid waxing and skin-smoothing treatments while you take it and for at least 6 months after your last dose. So Jo doesn't do dermaplaning, peels or sea spicules until at least 6 months after your final dose. Ask your doctor about timing, and Jo can tell you if a gentle facial is a good fit.

What is Reiki, and do I need to believe in it?

Reiki is a gentle Japanese relaxation practice. Jo rests her hands lightly on or just above you while you rest. You don't need to believe in anything to enjoy it. Most of Jo's clients simply find it deeply calming.

Is dermaplaning safe for my skin?

Dermaplaning gently removes dead skin and fine facial hair from the top layer of your skin, using a new single-use blade each time. It isn't right for everyone. Jo checks your skin first and skips it if your skin gets dark spots easily, if you form keloid scars, or if you have active acne or rosacea (a flare-up happening now), open breakouts, sunburn or irritation.

Can I wear makeup after my facial?

Wait at least a day. Your skin does best with a little time to rest after a facial.

Can I add Sensory Bliss to my facial?

Yes. You can add any Sensory Bliss treatment to your facial, in the same visit. Call or text Jo at 805-744-5545 to book them together, or to ask about a custom package.
